The Check 21 Act

In the past financial institutions spent a lot of time and money transporting checks from place to place. The new Check 21 Act went into effect October 28th allows paper checks to be replaced by substitute checks that are created by electronic images. This process removes the original check from circulation and greatly speeds up the procedure.

If you normally receive your original cancelled checks with your bank statement, you will be receiving substitute checks for some of these items.
These substitute checks will clearly show all the information on the front and the back of the original check.
A substitute check is the legal equivalent of the original check.
If an error is made involving a substitute check, you may have the right to file a claim for recredit.
